Nordic Network of Churches as Tourist Attractions
About the network
The Nordic Network of Churches as Tourist Attractions brings together churches across the Nordic region that serve both as active places of worship and as popular tourist destinations.
The network grew out of conversations at Nordic UNESCO meetings and is now opening up to churches beyond the UNESCO World Heritage community. It is an informal, free-of-charge network for sharing experiences, discussing common challenges, and learning from one another. We are now around 20 churches in the network.

An informal Nordic network for churches welcoming both worshippers and tourists
Working in a religious monument means balancing many different needs, perspectives and emotions. Churches are places of faith and identity for local communities, while also welcoming visitors from around the world.
The network provides a space to discuss practical questions such as:
-
How can we balance tourism and worship?
-
How do we distinguish between worshippers and tourists?
-
Should churches charge an entrance fee, and how can this be handled respectfully?
-
How do we manage crowds while preserving the sacred character of the church?
-
How can we remain open and welcoming while also protecting the needs of the congregation?
The focus is not on finding one right answer, but on sharing real experiences and exploring different approaches.
How does it work
The network is informal, flexible and member-driven. There is no formal board or fixed structure, but a steering group.
Meetings will be held online and will be shaped by the participants. Churches can introduce themselves, bring a question or dilemma, suggest a topic, or simply listen and exchange experiences with colleagues from across the Nordic countries.
The network will grow gradually and organically, based on the shared reality of churches serving both their congregations and the wider public.
We welcome churches that would like to take part in this developing Nordic network.
